Remittances Developing Moldovan Communities

Following more than a decade of migration, Moldova ranks now the second most remittance-dependent country in the world, and the wealth of relatives and friends is inspiring many others to follow suit. While remittances have been instrumental in alleviating poverty for countless families, analysts agree that the long-term development of the country cannot depend upon them.

The project has the goal to contribute to the linkage of migration and development through support of migrant economic initiatives in the communities of origin. Moreover, the project aims to increase the investments of young remittance-recipients in rural economic development activities in the 5 largest districts of Central Moldova by providing guidance, information as well as trainings and capacity building programs.

The project activities focus on development and replication of best practice business models for young remittance recipients. This includes publishing and disseminating training handbooks on business cycle management and best practice business models, organising a series of thematic workshops and trainings as well as establishing a Resource Centre in Orhei to provide business consultations and up-to-date information on investment, jobs and training opportunities.

Project duration: 1 April 2011 – 31 January 2013.
